A message from LocalVegEtc
Even before lockdown was enforced on 23rd March we had a food supply problem. There was increasingly little on the shelves quite apart from the toilet roll shortage and going to the shops was discouraged particularly for the over 70s and for anyone with an ‘underlying condition’.
Whilst queueing outside the local butcher in Sonning Common I heard that Dudmans, a wholesale fruit and veg merchant at Emmer Green, would deliver. That first week I bought a fruit and veg box and some supplies for some neighbours and my parents. It was a joy to receive the box and the most enormous relief, but the Dudmans delivery driver was harassed – he had tens of deliveries all to residential households and they were not set up for retail.
I asked him (without thinking of the possible implications), “Would it would help if I did some deliveries locally and you could just deliver to here as a hub?”
“You bet!” he said.
Our first delivery to the local neighbourhood was on 2nd April 2020 and we have been delivering weekly ever since. We now sell meat, eggs, cheese and honey (and even dog treats) from our local butcher, Carl Woods, as well as delicious baked goods from local bakery, Warings.
Local Veg etc has been set up by local volunteers for local people and is supporting local businesses. We have created a social network round these weekly deliveries to over 30 customers and we are all contributing to that precious commodity ‘social capital’.
Can this continue? I hope so.
