Planning Appeal for Former Reading Golf Club Development Dismissed The appeal by Fairfax to build 70 homes on part of the former Reading Golf Club site within our parish has been dismissed.
We were notified of the Planning Inspector’s decision on 11 June. This means that no additional housing development will take place on the golf course site for the foreseeable future.
This outcome is a significant achievement for our community, and we extend our sincere congratulations and thanks to Sue Biggs, Anna Vorster, Bettina Kirkham, Lyn Stewart-Ashley and John Fitzsimons of Cornerstone for their outstanding work throughout the Inquiry process.
The team devoted countless hours to preparing evidence and presenting the community’s case.
Anna Vorster and Bettina Kirkham were cross-examined on both our Neighbourhood Development Plan (NDP) and the value of the local landscape. They represented the community with professionalism, expertise and passion, making a compelling case for protecting this important area.
The Inquiry itself lasted longer than anticipated, with the closing submissions ultimately being conducted via Zoom. The dedication and commitment shown by the entire team throughout this demanding process were exceptional, and we know the community joins us in expressing heartfelt thanks for their hard work.
We would also like to thank everyone who contributed to our crowdfunding campaign, which raised a net total of £10,935.01 towards the costs of the appeal. Special thanks are due to CADRA for its generous donation of £840 to the appeal fund.
Finally, we are grateful to all those who supported the campaign by distributing flyers, attending the Inquiry and helping to raise awareness of the issues involved. Around 40 local residents attended the proceedings, demonstrating the strength of local feeling and the importance of this application to the community. Their presence ensured that the Inspector was fully aware of the considerable public interest in, and concern about, the proposed development.
This decision reflects the value our community places on its landscape, planning policies and local environment, and it is a result that many residents will warmly welcome.
