Welcome to Gallowstree Common

Gallowstree Common is named after on oak tree that used to stand away from other trees and was used, as its name implies, as a gallows. It is thought that the last hanging was in 1825 for sheep stealing. The tree no longer stands and its stump was removed at the time of the village enclosure. Gallowstree Common also has its well and the wellhouse is a listed building with low red brick and flint-panelled walls. One side of the wellhouse is completely open for access to the well and its iron winding gear. There are two listed buildings in Gallowstree Common, the other one being The Orchards, which is a Grade II brick and timber framed house with parts of it dating from the C17.

Religious and Community Life In 1880, a Primitive Methodist chapel was established in the hamlet, accommodating up to 50 congregants. The chapel remained in use until its closure in 1987.

Surrounding Landscape

The area around Kidmore End and Gallowstree Common used to be well-known for its cherry orchards. The hamlet is surrounded by natural features, including New Copse and Withy Copse woods. Nearby historical sites of interest include Greys Court, an estate with medieval origins, and the ancient earthworks of Grim’s Ditch.

(GCROUT) Gallowstree Common Register of Useful Things

(sample page for Gallowstree Common residents)

One of our residents thought what a good idea it would be for everyone to share their various tools and equipment with neighbours. So many of us have various bits of equipment that we use once and then lie at the back of the shed or garage and are never seen again, until that clear out period comes along.

One can access GCROUT on the Gallostree Common community WhatsApp and there are lots of other recommendations on a wide range of products and services.
