Cabinet to consider support package for South Oxfordshire pubs
24 June 2026
Targeted support to help South Oxfordshire’s much-loved pubs will be considered by South Oxfordshire District Council’s Cabinet in July.
South Oxfordshire District Council is exploring offering a focused one-off business rates reduction to help support the sector and ease pressures on pubs across the district.
Local pubs are more than just places to eat and drink — they are important community spaces, valued rural assets and key contributors to the local economy, however many face significant financial challenges.
Cllr Pieter-Paul Barker, Cabinet Member for Finance and Property Assets, said: “Everyone knows that pubs are experiencing significant financial pressures. These venues play an important role in the economy and are vital for ensuring a thriving local community.
“We’re carefully considering how best to provide targeted support for pubs in South Oxfordshire which will both help to strengthen our local and rural economy and safeguard employment in our hospitality sector.
Cllr Maggie Filipova-Rivers, Leader of South Oxfordshire District Council, added: “While this support can’t fix everything, it’s a step in the right direction. We’re staying focused on collaborating with our local pubs and partners to provide the practical support and guidance they need right now.”

A decision on the proposed support will be confirmed at the Cabinet meeting on Thursday 2 July.
