Repairs are progressing, and the new sills are in place, the doors over the well shaft have been refitted, and the main part of the well head that required repair has been finished. However we have run into a new problem. The roof needs to be repaired. When Andrew Jarvis started to do his conservation work on the roof, he discovered that many of the timbers and roof ribs were rotten and required significant work. This is time-consuming, with rotten parts removed and replaced with new; sometimes only a few centimeters of new wood is needed. New oak timber with a wood grain ‘twisted’ to the correct angle for new ribs has been found and the templates cut out. However, this work comes with a significant bill of around £6K. Luckily, there are funds in the pot because of the brilliant fund raising that has been carried out. And if we sell a few more mugs, then we will be able to afford the new shingles for the roof. Please contact me on caroline.aldridge@kepc.info if you would like a mug or two. Don’t delay to purchase your limited-edition, bone china mugs at £10 each.
